Fracking

Some Sunnyhillers have expressed an interest in attending a Marcellus Shale awareness rally in Washington DC on Saturday, July 28. The purpose of the rally is to push back on the rush to drill and to demand greater accountability for the damages caused by hydraulic fracturing.

I have emailed some local environmental groups who are planning to attend and who may be renting a bus. If you want to be kept in the loop about possibly joining other Pittsburghers by bus, carpooling with other Sunnyhillers or going yourself, let me know. And in the meantime, visit http://www.stopthefrackattack.org/ for more info.

So why should this issue matter to UUs? I personally believe all comes down to our 7th principle.

Within the UU community, hydraulic fracturing is an issue that's becoming particularly hot for our fellow UU churches in Ohio as they start down the road to drilling that Pennsylvania has already been traveling. They are organized and even though opening up our state for drilling is a "done deal" in Pennsylvania, the Social Justice Committee still believes there are issues we can promote here that reinforce our UU values and might allow us to connect with the UU churches in Eastern Ohio that are already mobilized around this issue. Greater accountability, oversight and regulation are examples of stands we can take in Pennsylvania that might make sense for us.

That's my 2 cents, but I just wanted to keep everyone in the loop, in case some of you are interested in this event.

Peace,
