Sunnyhill's New Home Blog -- ENDING the CONSTRUCTION and RESTARTING the meeting space

Tonight, the New Home Blog will be updated, probably for the last time. After Sunday, the Blog will no longer be necessary; you will be able to see what's happening at Sunnyhill for yourselves. While most of work on our new home will be finished when you arrive on Sunday, there will still be odds and ends to sort out. For example, the coat niches will not be completed, and some of the RE spaces won't be set up. But, it will get done.

When Judy and I first became UUs in Paramus, New Jersey, in the late 70s, we were advised that the best way to meet people and to become part of the fabric of the community was to volunteer - to get involved. The importance of getting involved is true at Sunnyhill as well; we helped paint trim in the north wing before we attended our first service. I'd like to personally thank the many volunteers who have spent countless hours working on our new and refurbished home. I've come to know and appreciate many people I only knew in passing, and I hope our working together will result in lasting friendships. Thank you for all you've done and all you will continue to do.

The UK & Europe after Brexit, according to Max O.

https://globalriskadvisors.com/blog/uk-europe-brexit/

Way to write Max.

National outlook as the new year approaches from John H

From John H:
Beginning a new year in 2017 should be a happy, uplifting time, but that no longer appears to be a real possibility with the new reality of a Trump administration staffed with billionaires and militaristic neocon generals all pledged to do Israel’s bidding to whatever extreme Netanyahu might desire – and, as we have seen repeatedly, that is extreme indeed. Coupled with the newly fervent anti-Russian furor, it is no longer a 1950s delusional nightmare to contemplate outright nuclear war with Russia and/or China in the near term, not somewhere down the road. As the attached articles point out, it seems as if the U.S. has finally gone insane in its attempt to rule the world without dissent or competition. If one is not frightened by this new reality . . . well, you know the rest. Happy New Year . . . we can only hope that saner heads prevail.

SUUSI 2015 to depart Radford

Dear SUUSI Community,

We are working hard to plan for a fabulous SUUSI 2015. We have recently been informed, however, that Radford University cannot host us this summer. While this was unexpected and we were surprised, the SUUSI director, board and core staff are all working hard to finalize a new location for our beloved intentional community as soon as possible.

Changes are ahead, and we hope we have good news to share with you soon. While familiarity is comfortable, novelty can be exciting and stretch us in new ways. SUUSI 2015 will be new and different. SUUSI goers will have an opportunity to practice flexibility. We will be building bridges in ways we didn't expect!

Stay tuned as information comes available.

If you have any ideas, thoughts, etc. please email them toexpectchange@suusi.org.

Fracking

Some Sunnyhillers have expressed an interest in attending a Marcellus Shale awareness rally in Washington DC on Saturday, July 28. The purpose of the rally is to push back on the rush to drill and to demand greater accountability for the damages caused by hydraulic fracturing.

I have emailed some local environmental groups who are planning to attend and who may be renting a bus. If you want to be kept in the loop about possibly joining other Pittsburghers by bus, carpooling with other Sunnyhillers or going yourself, let me know. And in the meantime, visit http://www.stopthefrackattack.org/ for more info.

So why should this issue matter to UUs? I personally believe all comes down to our 7th principle.

Within the UU community, hydraulic fracturing is an issue that's becoming particularly hot for our fellow UU churches in Ohio as they start down the road to drilling that Pennsylvania has already been traveling. They are organized and even though opening up our state for drilling is a "done deal" in Pennsylvania, the Social Justice Committee still believes there are issues we can promote here that reinforce our UU values and might allow us to connect with the UU churches in Eastern Ohio that are already mobilized around this issue. Greater accountability, oversight and regulation are examples of stands we can take in Pennsylvania that might make sense for us.

That's my 2 cents, but I just wanted to keep everyone in the loop, in case some of you are interested in this event.

Peace,

Ann Trondle-Price

Rest in peace, dear friend to so many.

Shirley Jean Williams died on Sunday, April 1, 2012 at the age of 86, after 64 years of wedded bliss to Robert.  Loving and devoted mother to Larry (deceased), Stephen (deceased), Caroline and Sam.  Caring and thoughtful mother-in-law to Jeanne, Steve, LeAnn and Marthika.  A doting grandmother to Stephanie, Cara Rose, Nora, Erin, Michael and Nicholas.  Regrettably, because the grandkids lived in CA, NJ and TX, the opportunities for spoiling them did not present themselves nearly as often as she would have liked. Shirley, a lifetime Unitarian, was born in Tulsa, OK and attended the All Souls Unitarian Church and sang in the choir.  For the past 42 years, she and her husband have been members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills.  Shirley's true passion (besides Robert) was preparing gourmet meals for her appreciative family and many friends.  She worked fulltime as an administrative assistant for various companies and ended her career as the office manager at Baskin, Sears, Gondelman, Craig & Sachs in Pittsburgh. A memorial service is being planned for Sat., May 5th. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to her two favorite charities: Women's Center and Shelter of Pittsburgh and the Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills.

What do you hope our congregation can accomplish in the next year? Two years? Five years and longer?

Come break bread, share a bowl of soup, and help with the process of long range planning for the UUCSH.  Spend about 45-minutes in three of six facilitated sessions of your choosing:

Also, there will be other opportunities to add your ideas to all of the topic areas.

Soup and bread will be available in each of six areas/rooms. This will be BYOB-as in "bring your own bowl" (and spoon, plate and napkin if you wish). Sign up is in the Dining Room. Please be sure to indicate if you'll need childcare, so we can plan accordingly.

Do you want to teach a workshop in Virginia next summer

Dear SUUSI,

We're pleased to announce that we are joyfully accepting SUUSI 2011 - Joy! - workshop proposals through Nov. 1! Please log into your SUUSI SOLIS account to find the proposal form.
Go to https://solis.suusi.org/ and log in using your email address and password. If you have been to SUUSI since 2007, you should have an account already in the system. You will be able to reset your password, if you have forgotten it or if you have never logged in. You will need to be able receive mail at your registered email address to reset your password. Once you log in, you can click on the "Submit a Workshop Proposal for SUUSI 2011" link to start your proposal.
Successful workshops take many different forms and shapes. Together, we teach and learn about music, the arts, crafts and hobbies, spiritual and religious growth, movement and bodywork, relationships, sports and recreation, and sometimes we just gather to play games and have fun. Most workshops are held on campus, but some involve local travel to various places. Some workshops this year will be brand new, while some will be those that we've enjoyed in the past. And some will be 1-4 day events, while some will be happen every day of SUUSI. As a whole, the SUUSI workshop program promotes community-building, personal growth, and joy by offering a diverse selection of high-quality workshops. Workshop leaders receive credit toward their SUUSI registration costs in exchange for their volunteer service.
A few tips: as you create your proposal, please pay special attention to space and equipment requirements. The more equipment that you are able to provide for yourself (cd players, flip charts, ipod speakers, etc.), the better. And while we are limited in the spaces that we can offer for workshops, knowing as much as possible about your space wishes will increase our ability to offer something suitable. Also, please be sure to indicate any flexibility that you may have in the number of sessions that your workshop will include, as well as when and on which days the workshop will be offered. We aim to offer a balance of single-day and multi-day offerings, held in both the morning and afternoon slots. And finally, ask me questions. If you're new to leading workshops, or of you have an idea for something you'd like to offer but aren't sure about some of the specifics, or if you just have a general question, please let me know. I have personally been blessed by attending and leading numerous workshops over the years at SUUSI, and I truly can't wait to join with you in continuing that beautiful history of joy, growth, and friendship. You can always email me at workshops@suusi.org.
And remember, Nov.1 one is the deadline!
Warmly,

Bill Neely, SUUSI 2011 -Joy!- Workshops Coordinator

Mount Lebanon Village Intergenerational Games

From: Larry Evans

Here's the skinny on a unique Mount Lebanon Village Intergenerational Games set for Saturday, August 14 at Mount Lebanon Park and the Cedar Blvd fields. The softball games will be using the 16" leather Chicago Softball! Should be a gas!

412-445-2951
This summer, there is a new game in Lebo town -the Mount Lebanon Village Intergenerational Games being held on Saturday, August 14, 2010, 9am-2pm in Mount Lebanon Park. Mount Lebanon Village (MLV) is a community oriented, non-profit organization established in 2009 to give residents of Mount Lebanon 50 years and older the practical means, confidence and peace of mind to enjoy life in their own place of residence and in an environment they value as they grow older.

The MLV Games present a way to get to know our neighbors, to enjoy a day of playing together and to celebrate our common bonds. The Village Games are designed to bring together old friends and new acquaintances, pairing people of different ages and generations. The idea is to partner adults over 50 with someone under 50. The pairings could be with a son, daughter, grandchild, friend or neighbor – or maybe even some husband and wife teams! Partners will spend the day participating together in the activities of their choice. It will be a fun packed day of gently competitive team sports, individual pursuits and group games, followed by a picnic and prizes. Participants will be given a chance to win prizes for every event in which they partake.
The Village Games will open with a 9am "Chase Your Elders" one mile fun run/walk in Mount Lebanon Park where older folks start first, followed by a staggered progression by their younger partners so that all may finish at about the same time.

From 10am-1pm in Mount Lebanon Park, choose from a wide variety of friendly co-ed, intergenerational team sports including volleyball, softball, soccer, basketball, tennis & bocce as well as measure your athletic skills in a 50 yard dash, punt, pass and kick, free throws, target toss & radar gun stations, plus enjoy old fashioned games like a treasure hunt, relay races, water balloon toss, horseshoes, shuffleboard, hula hoops , scrabble, checkers & chess. You can also engage in creative activities such as an inter-active story-telling session led by the Pittsburgh Wing and a Prayer Interplay Troupe.

Beginning at noon, enjoy an old fashioned picnic provided by Pittsburgh Barbeque at the Mount Lebanon Tennis Center Founder's Room and Deck. Enjoy delicious food to live music. Ted Sohier of WQED will be picnic MC and prizes will be drawn throughout.
REGISTER at http://. by JULY 31st to receive a nifty Mount Lebanon Village Games T-shirt! http://www.mtlebanonvillage.org/  Further Information: 412-343-4054
